Underneath the Marben restaurant on Wellington St. you’ll find The Cloak. The hidden-away bar includes vintage hockey sticks on the wall, but don’t let that confuse you-it’s not your average sports bar. Drinks named after your favourite punk songs and cozy booths make it the perfect place for some unexpected fun. To get in, head to 488 Welling St. West and look for the neon BAR OPEN sign and call the phone number listed underneath.
On Ossington Avenue, you’ll find many watering hole options. If you want to try something out of the ordinary, check out Gift Shop. Located behind a barbershop at 89-B Ossington Ave, you’ll find one of the most unique experiences in the city. Serving up hand-crafted cocktails with a no-nonsense attitude, it’ll quickly become your new go-to. We recommend making a reservation if you don’t want to wait.
The Toronto Temperance Society
The Toronto Temperance Society is a private club, opening in 2010 and has been well-respected ever since. Well, they boost a members-only atmosphere, a phone call or email can get you in if they have availability. The bartenders are known for being well-dressed and even better-versed in the extensive cocktail menu. If mixed drinks aren’t your thing, they also have a curated beer menu to peruse. Located above Sidecar restaurant at 577 College St, make sure you ask the host how to get in when booking.
In the heart of Yorkville, you’ll find an unexpected tapas bar called Figures. Walking into the comic book and toy shop front, you’ll enter through a secret door and find a one-of-a-kind restaurant. Between the Pacman-inspired ceiling and custom comic art throughout the space, you’ll be transported to a simpler time. Head to 137 Avenue Road to experience it for yourself.
One of Toronto’s most talked-about hidden bars is Mahjong Bar. Tucked away behind a pink bodega storefront, you can indulge in a glass of wine or beer while taking a break from the norm. The over-sized keyhole-shaped doorway is the beginning of the eccentric decor. Visitors are welcomed into a world of Chinese small plate dishes and vibrant cocktails. Their drinks are beyond unique and cannot be replicated anywhere else. You might walk in expecting a Tarot Card reading, but what you’ll find is worth discovering. The Libertine is home to comfy booths that created a vintage vibe.
